When I was in higher as a freshman, this textbook was assigned for a survey class. Information technology was the beginning textbook I've ever decided to continue and since then, I have read it near entirely. I don't have an AH degree or anything like that, only as a enthusiast I wuld recommend it for anyone who aspires to augment their understanding of the history of art. It's easy to read, the annotations are terrific and I only really enjoy information technology.

I had to read the entire book in a schoolhouse twelvemonth for my fine art history class, and although there was a lot to get through, it is a quality textbook. Interesting to read with a good format and a large amount of information. I would recommend it to anyone into art history with a need for a compendium of all art from prehistoric to 20th century.

Art history is a subject field in crisis.

Information technology calls itself "art through the ages." Information technology makes a pretense of existence global. What information technology really deals with is wealthy-white-male person European art up until about 1900. Inside of that narrow lens, it can uphold the pretense of a narrative arc. Movements and developments that build upon each other to create ane structure, i tradition. The story is in line with a 'Great Human being' view of history that unspools with a certain succession of empires and kings and no demand to think almost the plebes. But memorize the dates and you're done.

Just everything outside of that ane narrative arc haunts the discipline. Frightened, the editors brand nods here and there to art happening in other places. They rapidly articulate their throats and get us back to Europe. But Europe itself is unspooling. When mod art hits, they lose the thread entirely. They become drastic. In the end, they can merely huff and puff about the absurdities of "multiculturalism."

Within this story of art's history, art is rooted in conquering. Killing animals and humans. Building empire. Celebrating empire.

Sometimes something tumbles out from the gaps, even here. Small fine art, quondam faces, feathers and fur. Usually they call it "the grotesque."

Information technology still is awkwardly worded and however doesn't say much, but it certainly says more than than the 14th Edition I'chiliad currently using for the second half (Renaissance to 1900) of fine art history.

*edit on May viii* I've now used this volume for multiple other classes, bated from art history, namely for mythology and archaeology. Quite indispensable for liberal students... practically all subjects tin can be tied to art history in some way or another.

OK, so I read this for school, which tempers information technology a chip, merely overall I found it a clear, like shooting fish in a barrel-to-read history of art, skillful for getting an overview of a variety of periods, styles, and artists.

This was the textbook for my intro art history grade in college. Not as gorgeous to look at or as well written as Gombrich or Janson, simply more comprehensive. The timelines in each affiliate were helpful context. Well-nigh of the art and architecture had small black & white images, with color reproductions off in their own collation.

I was taking Western Civ at the same time, and the two course reinforced one another. Art Through the Ages was an essential volume to me.

This book brings back and then many memories. This is one of the few books aside from my theatre anthologies that I kept from my higher classes. This volume along with the grade gave me a modest agreement of art and architecture through the beginnings of civilization.
